Inspired by Vintage Chain Design

The FRJ Signature Link Old School draws from vintage fob and watch chains. This handmade 9ct gold chain centres on the balance between elongated links and smaller round links. FRJ developed the proportions through several silver samples before settling on the final form. As a result, the chain has a classical style with a strong, defined rhythm. Each link is solid, giving the chain a substantial feel without relying on hollow construction. Together, the careful proportions give the design its distinctive old-school character.

Designed for Layering and Pendants

At 54cm, the Old School sits naturally as the longest layer in a necklace stack. This length creates space for shorter chains and pendants to sit above it. In addition, a 20mm swivel clasp adds another practical detail to the design. It allows a pendant to clip directly onto the chain and gives the wearer freedom to change the focal point. At the same time, the clasp also suits the chain’s heavy-duty construction and substantial scale. The result is a chain designed to carry weight while retaining a refined, classical profile.

Handmade in Cape Town

FRJ makes every Old School chain by hand in its workshop in Green Point, Cape Town. Here, each solid link is made with close attention to proportion, weight and finish. This vintage-inspired gold chain differs from mass-produced imported Italian chains through its construction and individual character. The design draws from an older jewellery language, yet the execution remains distinctly FRJ. Ultimately, it is a considered piece for someone who values solid gold, skilled making and strong design.
